Taking on this ambitious research agenda are a project team with long-standing interests in borders, imagined spaces and global border communities. Their interdisciplinary expertise has lead to the launch of the ‘Living on the Edge’ project and its unique approach to borders and borderlands.

Dr Edmond Smith

Edmond is a Presidential Fellow in Economic Cultures at The University of Manchester. Smith’s expertise on the topic of Borderlands has previously been published in the European History Review and Intinerario.

Dr Lisa Hellman

Lisa has recently begun a new position as Research Leader at Bonn University. Previously, she was postdoctoral scholar at the school of Global Intellectual History at Freie Universität Berlin. In general, Lisa works in the intersection between cultural, maritime and global history, with a focus on early modern Central and East Asia, and has published in five languages on the topic of how intercultural interactions changed the lives of the men and women involved.
